The event paid tribute to superstar recording artist Katy Perry and TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie, who were presented with amfAR’s Award of Courage in recognition of their profound commitment to the fight against AIDS, as well as countless other humanitarian causes. He also recognized guests who have been pioneers in the fight against AIDS, remarking that “our continued success, and ultimately, our quest to find a cure for this disease will be determined by committed individuals, just like all of you.”

Producer and entrepreneur Liz Heller presented the amfAR Award of Courage to TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie, sharing stories of his work with South African youth affected by HIV/AIDS. Accepting his award, Blake Mycoskie shared his experience of losing a loved one to AIDS, and noted that 5,000 people still contract HIV every day. He reminded guests that their support makes them “the hero in the story” of ending AIDS.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti presented Katy Perry with the amfAR Award of Courage, speaking about how she has “distinguished herself as an activist—as somebody who cares about making the world better around her.” In her acceptance speech, Katy Perry shared that she “sees this award not as an acknowledgement of work completed or as a closing chapter, but as a symbol of the work that we will continue to do together.”

The evening’s fundraising efforts culminated with a cash call donation match of up to $50,000 by global investment firm Bain Capital. Donations were made in honor of amfAR Award of Courage recipient Blake Mycoskie, who partnered with Bain Capital in 2014 to help TOMS further its mission. Longtime amfAR supporter Fredrik Eklund kicked off the cash call with a $30,000 donation.

Chris Tucker directed the audience to move from dinner into the Wallis Annenberg theater, where the legendary Dame Shirley Bassey ended the night with a spectacular orchestral performance of “Diamonds Are Forever,” “Almost Like Being in Love,” “I Am What I Am,” and “Goldfinger.” After the moving and powerful performance, guests attended the after party at Delilah, the exclusive Los Angeles club.

City of Hope raised more than six million dollars at a black-tie gala honoring Warner/Chappell Music Chairman and CEO Jon Platt. Beyoncé, JAY-Z, Pharrell, & Jermaine Dupri turned out for the star-studded event, which was held at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica.

Although she just wrapped up a major tour with her husband, Beyoncé took the stage again, this time performing solo at the City of Hope gala, donating her time for a good cause. She dazzled the 1200 guests with hits like “Xo,” “Ave Maria,” “Halo,” and Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect.” The event was to not only honor Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s good friend Jon Platt, but the money raised at the City of Hope gala will go toward the nonprofit’s research and treatment of cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases.

Jay-Z praised Platt’s many accomplishments and commitment to his craft, calling him an “incredible, passionate person” and “the Obama of the music industry.” Adding, “I can’t think of anyone more deserving to be prized in front of their peers, in front of the world, than my brother, Jon Platt.”

In his acceptance speech, Platt commended City of Hope’s important work: “At a time in our country when so much is broken, I think it’s important that we focus on those who are doing great in the world. People who devote their lives to fixing what ails us, to the people that are saving lives. And over the last few months I’ve had the privilege to meet with the people of City of Hope, the people that give City of Hope its name.”

Though initially hesitant about taking the spotlight at the City of Hope event, Platt emphasized how seriously he takes this honor – especially as an opportunity to shine a light on others: “As an African American CEO, I proudly embrace the responsibility to lend a helping hand to people of color who are coming up in this industry, as well as to represent my friends and my colleagues that are already doing good in this game.”

About Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is an illness caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted through the bite of an infected black-legged tick. The disease has been reported in all 50 states and more than 80 countries. All ages are affected, but children aged 3-14 are most at risk, with 200 new cases every day. Early diagnosis and treatment is the key to combating the disease. However, current diagnostics are 55% inaccurate, leading to delayed treatment. If untreated, Lyme disease can become a severely debilitating illness affecting multiple organs, including joints, heart, brain and other parts of the central nervous system. Even when treated early, up to 20% go on to suffer debilitating long-term symptoms that are difficult, if not impossible, to cure.

Egypt Travel and Safety Tips for Travelers

Egypt Travel and Safety Tips! While the country is safe for traveling and very welcoming to tourists, it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure a fun-filled vacation without incident.

By: Heather Newgen | Twitter: @hnvoluntourist

Ancient civilizations, exotic culture, fascinating history and stunning architecture make

Ancient civilizations, exotic culture, fascinating history and stunning architecture make Egypt one of the most desirable destinations in the world to visit. However, it’s also one of the most avoided places by travelers. In recent years the country has experienced high levels of political turmoil, violent protests and deadly terrorists attacks, causing tourism to drastically decline.

Egypt Travel Safety Tips: It’s true that certain regions of Egypt, like the North Sinai, aren’t safe to travel in, but there are dangerous areas in every country. That said, I finally pushed aside my concerns and went to Cairo, Giza and Memphis and had the perfect dream vacation. Single females traveling alone will elicit unwanted attention, so I hired a tour company to help eliminate any issues and I’m happy I did.

Egypt Travel Safety Tips: Travellers Egypt arranged my entire trip from flights to ground transportation, hotel and private tours. In addition, a representative from the company was with me at all times, so I didn’t worry about anything and I was shielded from the harassment that solo women tourists can be subjected to.

Locals are incredibly friendly and appreciate tourists so you will be welcomed. Here’s a few tips to plan your Egypt adventure and help ensure your safety.

1. Before booking your flights check the U.S. Department of State for travel warnings and updates.

2. Always sign up for the free S.T.E.P. program with the U.S. State Department that notifies the nearest U.S. Embassy where you are abroad in case of an emergency while traveling. You will also receive the most updated information on the country you’re visiting.

3. Traffic is crazy so don’t attempt to drive. I’ve never seen anything like it and pedestrians will dart in between the fast moving cars, which I also don’t recommend doing. When I was there I literally saw a man who was crossing the street get hit by a car. He was okay, but it was the most terrifying thing, so be careful when walking near traffic. In addition, allow an hour or two to get to where you’re going because traffic is so bad. Rush hour is every hour.

4. Have wipes or toilet paper with you. Many restrooms don’t have paper towels, hand dryers or toilet paper.

5. Most shops will offer you complimentary tea or coffee. It’s a Middle Eastern gesture of hospitality so enjoy! It’s delicious.

6. All places accept American dollars or you can by credit card, including AMEX. So you don’t need to exchange money–I didn’t.

Pyramids of Gizain Egypt Photo by: Heather Newgen

7. Local children who are from smaller towns around Cairo will swarm you and ask for a selfie so be prepared. It didn’t bother me, but it was a little overwhelming at times because of the amount of photo requests I would get. There would be large groups of children on field trips in Cairo and anytime they’d see an American or Caucasian, they’d be so excited.

Egypt Travel and Safety Tips!

8. Animal abuse is very common and hard to see. I was sick at times watching how owners treated their livestock. Don’t ride the donkeys or camels at the Pyramids of Giza because they’re horribly mistreated. I saw a camel being beaten by a chain and blood was gushing down his face. I ran over there and stopped the abuse, but it happens quite frequently and if tourists say something then hopefully it will stop. However there is an area not far from the pyramids where you see the most amazing views and the camels are treated properly. You will see them grazing on grass, they have water and look happier. So if you want that Instagram shot of you on a camel with the pyramids in the background, go there. Always be wary of animal attractions and don’t ride or take photos on animals that are chained, look frail or mistreated.

9. Everyone smokes–I mean everyone. It’s legal in restaurants and in stores. Oftentimes employees will have a cigarette while working, so if you’re someone who is sensitive to the smoke beware.

Egypt Travel and Safety Tips

10. There is Uber in Cairo!

Heather Newgen at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt

11. All hotels have safety measures like guests going through metal detectors upon entry and cars are checked for explosive devices with bomb sniffing dogs.

12. Cairo has a lively nightlife scene, but many bars close at midnight unless they have a tourism license, which allows them to stay open later. Traditional Egyptian are mostly men and women, especially solo female travelers will be subjected to a lot of unwanted attention and at times unwelcomed lewd comments. Western bars are usually located in 5 star hotels and women do not encounter the same level of harassment.

Egypt Travel Safety Tips

13. Public displays of affection are generally not viewed as acceptable. You will see younger couples hold hands, but anything more is considered disrespectful. No kissing or hugging in public, so cut down on the PDA. Some Egyptian women won’t shake hands with men they don’t know so be mindful when around others.

View of city from the Pyramids of Giza Photo by: Heather Newgen

14. The customer service in Cairo is exceptional from my experience. Locals wants travelers to feel valued and they cater to your every need.

Egypt Travel and Safety Tips!

15. The exchange rate is great and your money will go far. Things are very inexpensive. You should bargain with street vendors but be fair. Egypt is a poor country and this is how people make a living.

16. Get your visa ahead of time so you won’t have to at the airport when you arrive in Egypt. Sometimes it can take a long time and the visa requirements always chance, so it’s better to get it in advance. For people who live in Los Angeles you can go to the Egyptian Consulate. It takes about five days to approve. Or you can mail your passport to the consulate. For more information click here.

Egypt Travel and Safety Tips!

17. Taking photos of military personal and public buildings like train stations, police stations is prohibited. Also snapping pics inside many tombs and museums isn’t allowed. Read the signs carefully.

Memphis, Egypt

18. Standard tipping is 10%. You will see a service charge on your bill, but that goes to the restaurant and not the server. Also anyone helping you with luggage, directions, photos or any type of service will expect a couple of bucks or For taxis you agree on the price ahead of time–or you should. So tipping isn’t as customary, but if you have exceptional service you should round up or leave a little extra.

For full day guides it’s suggested to leave 100 LE

For drivers 50 LE, but I give more because traffic is so crazy and they’re job is incredibly challenging.

19. Drinking alcohol on the streets is illegal so don’t do it.

Egypt Travel and Safety Tips!

20. Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country so out of respect for the culture, you shouldn’t wear tank tops except for at popular tourist sights. However, you should bring a scarf or long-sleeved shirt to cover up after leaving the sight. Women should also wear skirts below the knees and longer pants. At tourist resorts it’s okay to wear shorts. Cairo is a very modern city, but still practices traditional customs and values.

Carousel of Hope Ball Honors Robert De Niro

Carousel of Hope Ball raised over $1.9 million for the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and honored Robert De Niro for his support to the organization.

Barbara Davis hosted her iconic Carousel of Hope Ball at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The gala, a Hollywood institution since 1978, honored longtime supporter Robert De Niro with the “Brass Ring Award” for his philanthropic efforts and continued dedication to the cause. Patrons of the evening were treated to show-stopping performances by legends Gladys Knight, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, and David Foster. The Carousel of Hope Ball has raised more than $100 million to date, with proceeds benefitting the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. This year’s gala alone raised over $1.9 Million.

Award-winning director David O. Russell took the stage to present his friend and frequent collaborator Robert De Niro with this year’s “Brass Ring Award.” De Niro delivered a heartfelt speech, recognizing the awe-inspiring work being done by the evening’s host, Barbara Davis. He listed the many reasons to love Mrs. Davis and said that “we’re all in her debt because she’s so nice, generous, and committed, but she doesn’t just throw money at the challenge of treating and beating type 1 diabetes, she puts her resources where they will do the most good. It’s informed philanthropy – not just about giving, but about getting it done!”

The award was named after the elusive brass ring that carousel riders would try to catch when the ride first became popular. Now universally recognized as a symbol of achievement, the brass ring represents the ultimate goal of finding a cure for diabetes. Each of the “Brass Ring Award” recipients exemplifies the dedication and strength that brings the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center one step closer to finding a cure.

The always-entertaining Jay Leno reprised his role of Master of Ceremonies, and added “Auctioneer” this year. He led a memorable live auction experience that had guests bidding on items ranging from a bespoke trip for four to the “albergo diffuso” Monteverdi Tuscany, to a private meeting with Clive Davis himself at his New York City office. During a silent auction earlier in the evening, guests had the chance to bid on a wide range of one-of-a-kind items including a Serena Williams autographed tennis racket, a Lenny Kravitz autographed Gibson Flying V guitar, a Meet & Greet with Lionel Richie in Vegas for four, and a three-night stay at The Kahala Hotel & Resort in Honolulu. The show was produced by another longtime friend of the organization, the brilliant George Schlatter. Music icons Clive Davis and Quincy Jones served as the evening’s Music Chairmen.

Los Angeles Regional Food Bank-Great Experience

Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has been serving the LA community since 1973. Currently 1.4 million people in LA experience food insecurity, meaning they’re unsure where their next meal will come. According to the LA Food Bank site, the organization has distributed more than 1 billion pounds of food to people in need and volunteers are always welcome.

By: Mario Rivas

I recently had the chance to volunteer at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank (www.lafoodbank.org) as part of “Studio Day,” during which employees from across the entertainment industry’s major studios come together to help. The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank acquires food and other products and distributes them to needy people through charitable agencies or directly through programs, as well as conducting hunger education and awareness campaigns and advocating for public policies that alleviate hunger.

My volunteer event was held at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank distribution center in the city of Commerce, just south of LA. It’s a (very) large warehouse. The objective was to put together boxes (or “food kits”) for seniors in LA County. Each kit contained pasta, fruits and vegetables, milk, peanut butter, and other essentials. As this was the 5th year for “Studio Day,” the event was well-attended and well-organized. TheLos Angeles Regional Food Bank event took place on a Saturday morning and I was able to park in the warehouse’s parking, but there was ample street parking as well. The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank had bathrooms and water was provided. We arrived around 9, were given a brief introduction and orientation, and were then assigned to stations along an assembly line-type operation.

There were 8-10 lines. I was at the end of one doing QC, which involved checking that every box had the right items in it, taping it up, and stacking it in palettes. The event lasted about 2 ½ hours. There was some chit-chatting with fellow Los Angeles Regional Food Bank volunteers early on in the day, but there really was no stopping once we got going! (Although people were encouraged to take brakes and hydrate as needed.) It was definitely very physical, but also very satisfying, and quite eye-opening to see the scale of the operation and to think that this process must be repeated week after week.

I’d definitely recommend volunteering at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and will be interested to go back during one of their “regular” volunteer ops.

Potsdam Day Trip from Berlin–Sandemans Tour

Potsdam Day Trip from Berlin–Sandemans Tour Review

By: Heather Newgen | Twitter: @hnvoluntourist

Berlin is an incredible place where you can eat schnitzel, enjoy giant steins of beer, take in the local art scene and learn about the dark history, which shaped the look of the city today. While there’s a long list of things to do, it’s highly recommended to switch up the metropolis scenery for a day to stroll in the stunning gardens and parks in Potsdam.

The former Prussian royal city is about an hour away from Germany’s capital and the best way to experience it is by a guided tour. After taking a free walking tour with Sandemans, I signed up for their Potsdam tour, which was 15 euros plus a 10 euro tip. My tour started at 11:00am and we left promptly for the train station. You’ll need the all day ABC pass to get to Potsdam. You can use it for any means of public transportation and it’s less than 8 euros, so it’s a good deal. Your guide tells you how to buy your ticket if you don’t already have one and your group will take the train together, which is about a 40 minute ride. From there you’ll take a bus for about 10 minutes and you use the same ticket.

Duarte was my guide for both of the tours I took with Sandemans, and he was great! He’s very attentive to everyone on the tour, made sure we all got on the train okay and had seats. He directed us to Potsdam every step of the way, and those who were older in the group or were nervous to use public transportation were well taken care of.  Our first stop on the tour was where the Oscar-nominated movie “Bridge of Spies” was filmed. The iconic location is just outside of Potsdam and Duarte told us interesting details about the area and Cold War era before we wandered towards the Old Dutch Quarter.

As we marveled at the red-bricked Dutch architecture and colorful streets, Duarte, who is incredibly knowledgable about historical events, talked about the significance of Potsdam and gave us time to walk around the fairy-tale buildings.

Since it was raining in Potsdam we didn’t get to see a few things that we would normally on the tour. But we did make it to the Cecilienhof Palace. This is where Allied leaders Harry Truman, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill gathered for the Potsdam Conference in 1945. We also saw the magnificent gardens and the Sanssouci Palace, which was the summer residence for Frederick the Great, King of Prussia.

We didn’t go inside any of the palaces since that’s an additional entrance fee, which isn’t included. However, the tour ends around 3:00pm so you’re free to explore anything else in Potsdam you’d like. If you want to head back to Berlin, the guide gives directions to where you’re going and helps you navigate the bus and train.

I thought it was a great tour to Potsdam and would encourage anyone to go. I was bummed the weather wasn’t better. But considering I still feel like we saw a lot of things, and I was happy I went.

The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) made a huge announcement today. For 2018, cumulative grant donations of over $1.6 million have been award.  70 local nonprofit organizations will benefit as a result. Over 600,000 underserved youth in some of the most challenged neighborhoods of Los Angeles will be impacted. These awards are part of the Dodgers Foundation annual grants program which disseminates funds three times a year to organizations who fall within its three pillars – Education + Literacy, Health + Wellness and Sports + Recreation.

“Our city is full of amazing organizations serving youth who need help accessing resources and opportunities, thus leveling the playing field,” said Nichol Whiteman, Executive Director of LADF. “We consider these organizations allies, true partners, working alongside us to transform lives, thereby making Los Angeles a better place. Our focus has been, and will continue to be supporting organizations who allow youth to thrive regardless of neighborhood or socioeconomic status.”

The construction of this $300,000 project is partially funded by generous donations from the City of Los Angeles, Yasiel Puig’s Wildhorse Foundation, the Tyler Development Corporation, Clayton & Ellen Kershaw, the LA84 Foundation, the Annenberg Foundation, the Leon Lowenstein Foundation, and the Bruce P. Rubenstein Family.

Additional special guests and speakers at the unveiling ceremony included State Senator Holly J. Mitchell, LA City Council President Herb Wesson, Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, Manny Mota, and Steve Yeager (Dodger Alumni), Alanna Rizzo (Los Angeles Dodgers Broadcaster), Aleta Williams (Daughter of Algin Sutton), Vicki Israel (Assistant General Manager, LA Department of Recreation and Parks), Tyler Udall (Tyler Development Corporation), Renata Simril (President and CEO, LA84 Foundation), Marsha Bonner (Director of Community Grantmaking, Annenberg Foundation), John Bendheim (Leon Lowenstein Foundation), Joe Baca, Jr. (Rialto City Councilmember), youth softball and baseball players representing the community of Algin Sutton, Dodgers RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities), the Natasha Watley Foundation, Girls Play LA, Yasiel Puig’s 66ers baseball team, Manchester Elementary School, Brotherhood Crusades, Alliance Judy I Burton Technology Academy High School, and the Boys & Girls Club. Dodgers players and officials gathered for a ceremonial “lighting of the scoreboard,” which was followed by a public community festival that included fun-filled activations including a Farmer John Dodger Dog Truck, LADWP Water Truck, LA Teams Sports Zone, Dodger Alumni autographs, Dodger Guy Character, Dodger giveaways and tunes from DJ Severe, the Dodger DJ.

“We are proud of the meaningful impact Dodgers Dreamfields have had on local communities. As we unveil our 50th, we are thrilled to extend and renew our promise to provide access and opportunity to youth throughout Los Angeles who need it most,” Mark Walter, Dodger Owner and Chairman, Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation.

“It makes perfect sense that the 50th Dreamfield would open right here at a recreation center named after the late Algin Sutton, who dedicated his career to connecting young people with opportunities to play,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “In Los Angeles, we are committed to making sure that every child has access to sports and recreation no matter what her zip code, and I’m so proud to call the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation our partner in increasing opportunities to play!”

“Congratulations to the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation for completing their 50th Dodgers Dreamfield”, said Mike Shull, General Manager, Department of Recreation and Parks. “We are proud of our partnership with the Los Angeles Dodgers and their commitment to invest in our City’s park system, which has created lasting disparities in access to quality open space and recreation programs for youth and families of our communities.”

During the unveiling ceremony, the foundation debuted its Dodgers Dreamfields Impact Report, outlining the tremendous influence that these fields have had on youth in Los Angeles’ most underserved communities including Central Los Angeles, Inglewood, South Los Angeles, Harbor City, San Fernando Valley, East Los Angeles, and La Puente. These fields provide kids with a positive and vibrant environment to participate in baseball and softball opportunities in their neighborhoods. In partnership with corporations, foundations, local municipalities, and individuals, Dodgers Dreamfields contribute to both community development and youth development by providing youth the opportunity and space to learn and play the game of baseball and softball, while building character and instilling important life lessons. Program resources and elements include backstop upgrades, dugout upgrades, irrigation improvements, surface re-grading, new home plate, pitching rubbers, and bases, outfield fencing and windscreens, turf renovation, sod installation, and new signage and scoreboard.

“We are so proud to have reached our goal of building 50 Dreamfields, but know that there is still much more work to be done,” said Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation Executive Director Nichol Whiteman. “These fields have given our local youth a sense of pride and ownership every time they step onto the mound or slide across home base. The value of these Dreamfields cannot be overstated, and we are excited to have the chance to share everything that baseball and softball have to offer with even more communities over the next several years!”

The LA84 Foundation is the longest-standing sponsor of Dodger Dreamfields, having provided funding for 43 of the 50 fields, beginning in 2003. “Today is an historic day for the kids of the Los Angeles area – 50 Dreamfields is a remarkable achievement,” said Renata Simril, President and CEO of the LA84 Foundation. Simril added: “In a world where there is too much ‘photo-op philanthropy,’ the Dodgers Foundation produces real and sustaining positive community impact.”

“I am proud to partner with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation for their 50th Dreamfield,” said Yasiel Puig. “I hope this field will ignite the children’s love of baseball and I hope the sport will bring as much joy to their lives as it has to mine. Giving back to the Los Angeles community with a gift that will impact future generations is truly an honor.”

“Ellen and I are so honored to be a part of LADF’s 50th Dodgers Dreamfield,” added Clayton Kershaw. “We have been partnering with them since they built the Universally Accessible Field in Baldwin Hills and are proud to partner with the foundation as they continue to impact thousands of kids throughout LA.”

A high need for youth baseball/softball recreation space, racial and ethnic diversity, high “park need” metric, number of youth living in the surrounding community, and current baseball/softball interest are all factors that will help the foundation determine the locations of these next fields. By maintaining current partners and establishing new ones, LADF will continue to positively impact communities throughout the Los Angeles area.

Airline Baggage Fees-American and Delta Raise Prices

Airline Baggage Fees. American and Delta Raise Prices in the same week to match JetBlue and United Airline’s checked on luggage prices.

As soon as JetBlue quietly announced the increase for their baggage fees, it was only a matter of time before the other airlines followed. And it didn’t take long. JetBlue kicked off the pricey fees August 27th. Hours later Canadian airlines WestJet and Air Canada followed.

A few days later United announced the hike in their checked on baggage fees. Now American Airlines and Delta have also increased theirs in the same week.

For all four carriers-JetBlue, American, United and Delta, fees for a checked bag have increased. Price are now $30 for a first checked bag, and $40 for a second checked bag. It’s $5.00 more to check on bag.

American Airlines site states, “This is the first time American has changed its domestic checked bag fees since 2010 and follows similar changes made by other airlines.”

As for United and their airline baggage fees, a spokesperson for the Chicago-based company told Bloomberg via email the following statement.  “As we continue to make investments that make travel on United better, we are making adjustments to our checked bag fees in select markets — most of which have not been changed for the past eight years.”

Airline baggage fees have spiked partly due to rising jet fuel prices that cut into the company’s profit margins. So now the customer will pay for this and will take a major hit in the wallet.

However, let’s be clear. The airlines are making big profits, according to this Bureau of Transportation report.

There is a way around paying for the overpriced airline baggage fees. Fly SouthWest Airlines. They still allow passengers two free checked on pieces of luggage and do not plan on charging customers for this service anytime soon.
