Actor Jeff Bridges Talks Poverty in America: “We Should Take Care of our own Country First”

From “The Dude” in “The Big Lebowski,” to Rooster Cogburn in “True Grit,” Jeff Bridges has played several iconic characters over the span of his prolific career—but his greatest role isn’t on the big screen—it’s fighting hunger.

Upset that 46.2 million Americans live in poverty and 16.7 million kids don’t have enough to eat, Bridges founded the End Hunger Network in1983; an organization dedicated to resolving the U.S. child hunger problem.

In recognition of his philanthropic efforts, the AARP featured him on the cover of their August/September 2015 magazine, and held a luncheon in his honor in Beverly Hills.

The Voluntourist was on hand at the event, and spoke to the Oscar winner about why he’s made this his cause.

“I have three girls—three children—and I can imagine not being able to feed my kids and how stressful that would be, and how detrimental that would be to my three creative daughters. They want to be doctors, scientists, and engineers and all this stuff, but the sad fact is if they don’t have that nutrition, they won’t be able to achieve their dreams,” he said.

“The Giver” star has been proactive about the problem on a global level, but explains why he shifted his attention to the U.S.

“I’ve been involved with the issue of hunger for about 30 years now. It started off to be international hunger with the famine in Ethiopia. Then about 20 years or so ago, America started to experience hunger here because a lot of programs that we’re keeping hunger at bay weren’t being fully supported,” he said. “I thought, rather than telling some other countries how to do it, we should take care of our own country first. I still am very interested in supporting international hunger issues, but I’m mainly focusing here.”

In addition to his own organization, the 64-year-old has been working with Share our Strength where he serves as the spokesperson for a campaign called “No Kid Hungry.”

“One of the things I’m most excited about is this texting program that “Share our Strength” has come up with. These kids who are in need get their nutrition in school, and when school is out, so is the source of their meals. So we’ve been going around from state to state working with governors and business leaders in different communities, letting them know there are summer meal programs that are available. There’s no questions asked and nothing to fill out. If families of the kids themselves text the word food to 877877, they can find out where these meals are being served in their area.”

The actor may have grown up living the rich and famous lifestyle with the unlimited privileges Hollywood has to offer someone with his resources, but he impressively remains unpretentious about his esteemed celebrity status, which he credits his family for.

“My parents first come to mind. I remember my dad back in the 60s reading a book for us, ‘The Family of Man.’ It was a book of photographs. It was basically human experiences all over the world. [He said], ‘How we live is quite rare’ and he said, ‘we’re a family and we’re all in this together.’ That’s kind of stuck with me.”

ISRAEL

COUNTRY INFORMATION

Israel is small yet beautiful Mediterranean nation located in the Middle East. The region has existed since before biblical times and, as a result, it has a rich and extensive history. It has been controlled by various empires and powers throughout the centuries and has only recently become its own state in 1948.

Many Jews migrated to the nation searching for a homeland, especially during WWII. However, there have been tensions between the Jews and Arabs for decades within the country. It was only recently that Israel signed peace treaties with some neighboring Arab countries.

If you’ve volunteered in Israel, we’d love to hear about your experience. Please let us know which organization you signed up with, what your trip was like, and if you’d recommend the program to others.

MOROCCO

COUNTRY INFORMATION

Located in North Africa, Europeans became interested in Morocco around the 1800s. France and Spain divided the land and colonized the country for forty-four years.

After much opposition to European control, Morocco gained its independence in 1956 and has since undergone various political and social reforms. While economic policies have somewhat stabilized the economy, they haven’t spurred enough growth to cut down on the unemployment and poverty levels.

If you’ve volunteered in Morocco, we’d love to hear about your experience. Please let us know which organization you signed up with, what your trip was like, and if you’d recommend the program to others.

MEXICO

COUNTRY INFORMATION

First inhabited over 13,000 years ago, Mexico was originally comprised of indigenous people before the Spanish conquered the country in the 16th century. The Spanish presence infused the natives’ established civilizations with European culture.

As a result, Mexico still reflects the influences of the ancient and modern societies, which is evident in the nation’s languages, dialects, and customs.

Although the country now has the 11th largest economy in the world and draws millions of tourists each year with its beautiful beaches, festivals, natural wonders and amazing weather, almost half of Mexico’s population live in extreme poverty.

You can make a difference by assisting those in need in several areas such as health care, gender equality, and education. If you’ve volunteered in Mexico, we’d love to hear about your experience. Please let us know which organization you signed up with, what your trip was like, and if you’d recommend the program to others.

KENYA

COUNTRY INFORMATION

Kenya, known for its natural beauty, lush foliage and beautiful beaches, has been a land of unending change and diversity with a long, complex history.

Kenya gained its independence from the British in 1963, but the country still struggles with poverty, health care and education—all areas volunteers can greatly make a difference in.

If you’ve volunteered in Kenya, we’d love to hear about your experience. Please let us know which organization you signed up with, what your trip was like, and if you’d recommend the program to others.

UNITED STATES

COUNTRY INFORMATION

From its founding, the United States has been a country of immigrants. Many came to America searching better economic opportunities, while others fled Europe to avoid persecution over religious beliefs. Throughout the centuries, the U.S gained military and economic strength, resulting in superpower status and is now considered to be a global leader.

Given the widespread success of the country and the influence it has had on the rest of the world, most people don’t consider it a nation in despair. Although it maintains its reputation as a dominating power, there are many issues that are severely affecting the country such as civil rights, gender equality, poverty, and a lack of education.

INDIA

COUNTRY INFORMATION

After 200 years of British control, India broke free and established its independence on August 15, 1947 thanks to the help of leading figure Mohandas Gandhi, who was famously known for his passive activism practices and non-violent protests. Many believed India wouldn’t survive apart from Britain’s rule because of the country’s religious, ethnic and linguistic diversities and predicted it would soon become fragmented into mini nations (this clearly didn’t happen).

Instead, India has transformed drastically, but still remains a developing country. Despite a fast-growing economy with a largely skilled workforce, India is struggling with severe widespread poverty, especially in the rural areas, that is greatly affecting millions of people. International assistance is desperately needed.

Volunteers are essential in helping this country’s impoverished and underprivileged population gain the valuable knowledge and education needed to achieve a sustainable life. There are countless opportunities in India that allow others to serve the community and several programs which offer culturally immersive projects to volunteers. Not only do these projects create a meaningful contribution to India, but they also inspire a personal growth within individuals who participate.

HAITI

COUNTRY INFORMATION

In 2010, Haiti was devastated by a 7.0 earthquake that left over 300,000 people dead and 1.5 million homeless. However, long before the natural disaster hit the Caribbean nation, the country had been suffering from extreme poverty; therefore, struggling to feed and provide shelter for its population of over 10 million.

Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola (where in 1492, renowned explorer, Christopher Columbus, established the first European settlement) with the Dominic Republic. Haiti is considered to be the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere whereas the Dominican Republic is a popular tourist destination.

Environmental differences do contribute to part of Haiti’s troubles, such as the nation’s high mountainous ranges that cut off rainfall from the eastern part of the island. However, historical conflicts and deforestation are unarguably the leading causes for the major differences between the two countries.

In the late 17th century, Spain ceded the western part of the island to France and renamed the area Saint-Domingue. They successfully turned the small colony into a wealthy sugar and coffee producing enterprise. However, slave labor became essential for economic development.

Nations Online reports, “Under French colonial rule, nearly 800,000 slaves arrived from Africa, accounting for a third of the entire Atlantic slave trade. Many died from disease in the harsh conditions on the sugar and coffee plantations.”

The slaves revolted against the French and won their independence in 1804, thus changing the name to Haiti (which means “land of high mountains”) but not without a high price. A treaty was signed twenty years later recognizing their freedom, but at a cost of 150 million gold Francs.

The country’s trees were exported to France to pay for the debt (which was finally paid off in 1947). Sadly, the deforestation continues because the Haitians use trees for fuel. They also use charcoal which provides their energy source since oil is too expensive for the impoverished country to purchase. The result of deforestation has led to mudslides and flooding within the country.

There is a lot to do in Haiti to help rebuild the country. Volunteers are needed to teach children, work in healthcare, work in women’s empowerment, and construction. If you’ve volunteered in Haiti, we’d love to hear about your experience. Please let us know which organization you signed up with, what your trip was like, and if you’d recommend the program to others.

COSTA RICA

COUNTRY INFORMATION

Located in Central America, Costa Rica is considered to be the most stable and democratic out of all the Central American countries. They have been able to remain peaceful, they have incredibly high literacy rates, a strong educational system, they are dedicated to protecting human rights, they care deeply about the environment, and so much more. All of this considered, it is no surprise that Costa Rica has a thriving tourism industry.

Despite the positive attributes, Costa Rica does have massive problems with sex trafficking and forced labor, especially child sex trafficking. The country is working to enforce stricter laws and to help the victims, but they are relatively slow in doing so.

If you’ve volunteered in Costa Rica, we’d love to hear about your experience. Please let us know which organization you signed up with, what your trip was like, and if you’d recommend the program to others.

CHINA

COUNTRY INFORMATION

China is the world’s most populated country with 1.38 billion people. The country has an immense history spanning back to one of the oldest civilizations ever recorded, which has long intrigued foreigners and travelers alike.

Although the nation is considered an emerging superpower by many due to its economic growth, poverty is still a problem in several rural areas. In addition, China is continuously impacted by catastrophic events like earthquakes, floods and drought. Skilled volunteers can make a strong impact in disaster relief, rural rehabilitation, health care, and education.
