How “The Voice” Season 15 Finalists Give Back

While the Top 8 contestants of “The Voice” season 15 are battling it out for the grand prize, there’s something else the evolving artists are doing–giving back. Long before the singers made it onto the Emmy-winning reality show, they were volunteering. With their new platform, they’re now able to highlight those efforts and raise awareness for their charitable causes.

The Voluntourist talked to the remaining finalists about the inspiring ways they give back. Take a look below to see how “The Voice” season 15 contestants donate their time and talents.

Reagan Strange

Age: 14
Hometown: Memphis (Collierville), Tennessee
Resides In: Germantown/Memphis, Tennessee
Fun Fact: “I absolutely love chicken tenders with fries, Ketchup and Dr. Pepper. That is my dream meal.”
Cause: “I absolutely love the ASL walk back home. I sing at it every year and I love the charity. They’re so incredibly sweet. It means a lot for me that I can use the talent God has given me and share it with others. To be able to put smiles on people’s faces that don’t always have so much joy in their lives, that means a lot.”

Kirk Jay
Age: 23
Hometown: Bay Minette, Alabama
Resides in Montgomery, Alabama
Fun Fact: “I hate green foods. I don’t like the taste. Anything green I hate it unless it’s money.”
Cause: “I just want to give back to my community and people who supported me coming up. I want to help people musically and continue to help change lives.”

Chris Kroeze
Age: 27
Hometown & Resides In: Barron, Wisconsin
Fun Fact: “I’m embarrassingly good at Wii Ping Pong. We bought a Wii like five years ago and I played it for about a month straight. You will not beat me.”
Cause: “I don’t have a specific charity. But I’ve played hundreds and hundreds of benefits over the years. I plan on continuing to do that. With this exposure I hope I can bring in even more fundraising for whatever events come up. It’s important because I have something. In a community when they need help with something, if there’s a carpenter he’s going to help. If there’s a plumber, fireman, police officer. I just happened to be the guy in the community that plays music. If I can provide that for them to gain some money on or anything they need, then that’s my role.”

Kennedy Holmes
Age: 13
Hometown & Resides In: St. Louis, Missouri
Fun Fact: “I love Marilyn Manson. I also have a birth mark under my lip and people think I’ve been biting my lip but no, it’s a birth mark.”
Cause: “Annually I sing at this event called Thrive St. Louis. Their main goal is to provide for pregnant women so they can keep their child. It makes me teary to hear these women’s stories. They always want to keep their child, but at the time they’re not financially stable. So they’re not in a place to do so. Or they don’t have anyone to lean on for support. The organization is amazing and provides for them.”

MaKenzie Thomas
Age: 21
Hometown & Resides In: Wallingford, Kentucky
Fun Fact: “I’m a hard core metal head. I love heavy metal music. I absolutely adore it. My dad was a drummer, so I grew up listening to it. While I probably wouldn’t perform it because it’s not quite what my voice is made for, I definitely listen to it all the time.”
Cause: “Every year I sing for this event called Relay for Life. It’s a big walk we do to support cancer survivors and people that are going through cancer currently. Not only does it raise money, but it brings awareness. It’s also an outlet for me to continue to minister.”

THE VOICE — “Live Top 10 Results” Episode 1517B — Pictured: (l-r) Chevel Shepherd, Kelly Clarkson, Kymberli Joye, Sarah Grace — (Photo by: Trae Patton/NBC)

Chevel Shepherd
Age: 16
Hometown: La Plata, New Mexico
Resides In: Farmington, New Mexico
Fun Fact: “I have a pair of lucky socks that I wear onstage and I am wearing them right now. They are mismatched music note socks. I have a black one and I have a white one. I wear the right one on my left foot and the black one on my right foot. It is something I wear on stage every time I perform. I feel without them I am not going to perform my best. That is my good luck charm. I haven’t washed them because I feel as if the luck is going to wash away. They don’t stink though, I promise.”
Cause: “Hustle Kindness. It’s in my town and they help kids with autism. I got to do a meet and greet in their facility in downtown Farmington. I would love to do more of that. The kids are just like us. I want to give back to the kids who don’t get as many opportunities as we do. Or get viewed as differently even though they’re the same as us. I’d really like to give back to those kids.”

Kymberli Joye
Age: 27
Hometown & Resides In: Windsor, Connecticut
Fun Fact: “I’m an amateur photographer.”
Cause: “I’ve dealt for a long time with depression and anxiety. So I’ve decided to use my platform on “The Voice” to bring a face to these issues. So many people deal with it in the music industry. I want to let people know they’re not alone. It’s okay to talk to somebody and get some help. Therapy is not a bad thing. Depression and anxiety doesn’t mean you’re crazy. It’s something that we all have to work through and get through. You don’t have to do it by yourself.”

Sarah Grace
Age: 16
Hometown & Resides In: Houston, Texas
Fun Fact: “I have been singing my whole life and I picked up trumpet in the sixth grade, and I have been blessed to have both of those outlets. I have been able to take things I learned with my voice and move them to trumpet and I have been able to take things that I learned on the trumpet and move to my voice. The more technical side of my singing, I have learned from my trumpet. I never had a vocal lesson until I had a vocal lesson with Kelly Clarkson. I used to be a swimmer and water polo player so don’t mess with me!”
Cause: “I work with a group called United By Music North America. They teach special needs adults to play the blues. I’ve worked with them for about a year now and I love their cause. I love all of the people who work for them. It’s such an amazing community doing the right thing.

Animal Abuse in Morocco-How Tourists Can Help

Morocco is an unforgettable adventure and colorful experience. It’s an exciting place to visit, however, it’s also challenging.  Animal abuse in Morocco is common throughout the country and it’s upsetting to see. But there’s something tourists can do to help.

As I walked through the famed Medina of Marrakech for the first time I screamed. A man had tied a rope around the tongue of his donkey and was literally dragging it through the streets. The donkey was trying to fight what the man was doing and dug his heels in the dirt. But that only annoyed him more and he yanked the rope harder.

I yelled at the man to “stop” and to untie the animal. Unfazed by my shock, he glared at me and kept going. I stood in silence for minutes and cried as I unsuccessfully tried to get the image out of my head. A boy from a nearby shop ran out to apologize and said,” We tell him all the time not to do that, however he doesn’t listen or care.”

I was saddened and outraged. This wasn’t the first time I’d seen animal abuse in Morocco. This was my third time visiting the beautiful country and unfortunately I’d witnessed cruelty like this before.

As I continued walking I saw others excessively whip their sickly looking donkeys. I saw people make them pull heavy carts overloaded with materials, while others forced theirs to stand in the beating sun without water. It was crushing.

When I finally got to Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main square of Marrakech, I was shaking. And unfortunately that wasn’t the end of the animal abuse in Morocco I was exposed to. There were snake charmers and monkeys with a tight chain around their neck. They were dragged around like toys. Why? So tourists can take photos with them. As a result, owners continue the gross mistreatment of the animals because tourists keep paying them.

To be clear, if you take a selfie with these animals you’re supporting animal cruelty. Of course not everyone abuses their animals. Many treat them like family. But many also view working animals like donkeys and camels as just that–a way to earn an income and nothing more. However, there is an organization called SPANA that tries to improves the lives and welfare of the animals through education and training. They also provide free medical treatment to the animals.

While animal abuse in Morocco is jarring to see, there’s something travelers can do to help. Please watch the vlog for helpful tips.

Boston to Hawaii Travel just got Easier!

Boston to Hawaii travel just got easier thanks to Hawaiian Airlines and JetBlue. Today the airlines announced an expanded codeshare agreement that allows travelers from dozens of cities, most of them in the eastern U.S., to easily connect to the Hawaiian Islands via Boston’s Logan International Airport (BOS) starting in April.

Boston-area JetBlue customers can now purchase tickets on Hawaiian Airlines’ nonstop flight to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) with JetBlue’s ‘B6’ code and earn TrueBlue points when they fly.

Additionally, travelers originating in 26 cities – including Washington, DC (DCA), Pittsburgh (PIT), Philadelphia (PHL), Baltimore (BWI) and Cleveland (CLE), which currently cannot connect to Hawai’i through JetBlue in New York – can already purchase codeshare tickets that carry Hawaiian’s ‘HA’ code on their JetBlue flights that connect in Boston, and JetBlue’s ‘B6’ code on Hawaiian’s new nonstop flight between Logan and Honolulu. And they can use the ‘B6’ code on convenient Hawaiian flights that connect Honolulu to the entire island chain. Hawaiian and JetBlue’s guests also will continue to enjoy one-stop check-in and baggage transfers to their final destination, as well as the opportunity to earn and redeem loyalty rewards.

“We are excited to bring the Hawaiian Islands closer to more travelers and welcome our JetBlue guests with our warm hospitality the moment they check in for our flight in Boston,” said Brent Overbeek, Hawaiian Airlines senior vice president for revenue management and network planning. “We are Hawaii’s airline and our Mea Ho’okipa (“I am host”) inflight service philosophy is embraced by travelers for its celebration of our culture of Aloha. We know and love the Islands unlike any other carrier because Hawai’i is home to more than 6,500 of our employees and we have served our visitors and residents for almost 90 years. JetBlue’s excellent service have made it Boston’s largest airline by any measure and will provide Hawaiian guests new, convenient access to eastern U.S. cities.”

“As Boston’s #1 airline we welcome our partner Hawaiian Airlines to New England where JetBlue customers and our TrueBlue members now have the opportunity to conveniently travel to one of the world’s great destinations in superior comfort,” said Tracy Bink, director of alliances and partnerships, JetBlue. “Now Boston-based travelers, as well as new connecting customers throughout JetBlue’s network, will enjoy the same popular codeshare approach that has been successful in our New York hometown for six years with our Hawaiian Airlines partnership.”

Hawaiian and JetBlue also offer their loyal members the opportunity to earn and redeem points or miles for travel on either carrier. HawaiianMiles members can earn miles on JetBlue-operated flights, while TrueBlue members can accrue points on Hawaiian-operated flights. Similarly, frequent fliers can redeem their points or miles for travel on either carrier’s network, creating a long list of destinations for each program’s loyal members.

JetBlue flights connecting to and from Boston that are covered by the codeshare agreement are available at the following airports: Atlanta (ATL), Baltimore, Buffalo (BUF), Charlotte (CLT), Charleston (CHS), Chicago (ORD), Cleveland, Detroit (DTW), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Fort Myers (RSW), Jacksonville (JAX), Minneapolis (MSP), Nashville (BNA), New York (LGA and JFK), Newark (EWR), Orlando (MCO), Palm Beach (PBI), Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh-Durham (RDU), Savannah (SAV), Syracuse (SYR), Tampa (TPA) and Washington, DC both (DCA) and (IAD).

Hawaiian Airlines will begin its five-day-a-week service to Boston on April 4. Boston is the largest U.S. market without nonstop service to Hawai’i with nearly 500 people flying between eastern New England and the Islands on any given day.

In commemoration of Hawaiian Airlines’ 90th year of operation, the flight to Boston will be numbered Flight HA90. Starting with the inaugural flight on April 4, HA90 will depart HNL every day but Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. and arrive at BOS the following morning at 6 a.m. Flight HA89 will depart BOS every day but Wednesday and Thursday at 8:55 a.m., except for Friday flights, which will depart at 8 a.m. The flights will arrive in Hawai’i the same day at 2:35 p.m. and the Friday flight will arrive at 1:40 p.m. Both HNL arrival times offer guests ample time to settle into their accommodations and unwind with a Hawaiian sunset, or connect to Kaua’i, Maui or the Island of Hawai’i via the airline’s convenient schedule of some 170 daily interisland flights, all of which will have the JetBlue codeshare.

At 5,095 miles, Hawaiian’s BOS-HNL route becomes the longest regularly scheduled route in the U.S. Guests traveling from the East Coast to Hawai’i will enjoy the roominess and superior comfort of Hawaiian’s 278-seat Airbus A330 widebody aircraft. Incorporating flowing curves evocative of the winds and the ocean, Hawaiian’s spacious first-class cabin features 18 lie-flat leather seats that transform into 180-degree beds at a roomy 20.5 inches wide and 76 inches long. Aligned in a 2-2-2 configuration, the seats are ideally tailored to leisure guests such as couples, families and honeymooners, while offering functionality to the business traveler. Hawaiian also recently expanded to 68 from 40 the number of Extra Comfort main cabin seats, which offer a generous 36-inch pitch for extra leg room and priority boarding. Guests can upgrade to Extra Comfort seats for $145 each way.

Hawaiian’s Executive Chef Lee Anne Wong, owner of Honolulu’s Koko Head Café, collaborates with Hawai’i’s top chefs to delight guests with two meals served in each direction.

In Boston, JetBlue will soon offer flights to more than 70 nonstop destinations – many more than any other airline – and is the leader in the number of customers carried and total daily departures. JetBlue also serves Boston with premium Mint flights to a half-dozen destinations. With Mint, JetBlue re-imagined “business class” service offered by legacy carriers with lie-flat seating, curated food and amenities, and hospitality-trained inflight crewmembers – offered at an affordable price. JetBlue is on track to reach 200 daily departures at Logan in the coming years.

Berlin: An Inside Look at the Local Scene

Known for its eclectic mix of new and classic architecture, dark history and significant cultural landmarks, Berlin has become one of the hottest destinations in Europe to visit. The German capitol is an interesting blend of contradictions–glamour and grittiness, old and modern, laidback and wild. There’s a lot to learn about the city besides the historical aspect. There’s also a lot to experience like the buzzing nightlife and delicious dining. And the best way to take in Berlin and its diverse local scene is by a private tour, but not just any private tour, you need Henrik Tidefjärd.

By: Heather Newgen | Twitter: @hnvoluntourist

“I think the greatest way to discover a new destination is through food,” Tidefjärd said as we walked to Konnopke’s Imbiss for currywurst– German grilled sausage with curried ketchup on top. It’s the signature dish of Berlin and after gobbling up the vegan version, I was hooked. “This is the most famous place. Politicians, workers, tourists, and celebrities line up here at lunch and the queue is the whole street. It’s the top place for currywurst in Berlin,” he revealed.

Starting at $400.00 for an afternoon excursion, his tours aren’t cheap, but you’re guaranteed a good time. Tidefjärd, who is the founder of Berlinagenten, a luxury lifestyle tour company, is all about creating unique experiences for travelers. He introduces his mostly high-end cliental to trendy, chic places, amazing food and lively nightlife–and yes he goes out clubbing with you! Although he’s a licensed and professional guide, he’s more like the most convivial travel partner you’ll ever have.

He also takes his unforgettable tours a step further and caters to people who are looking for inspiration because they’ve already seen and done everything. Storytelling travel and concept VIP is the trend right now for high rollers who’ve traveled extensively and are in search of a new thrill.

“You create an experience almost like a theatre. So if you take a cruise or private boat then they will set up maybe like a mermaid on the rocks and then she disappears into the ocean. There’s no limit on price. It’s all about experience,” he said.

Henrik Tidefjärd

So what would a storytelling experience look like for Berlin?

“We have an edgy, sexy, underground, creative scene. You could step in behind closed doors and meet the founders of creative companies, go to a special bar, clubs and restaurants. Everything that Berlin is about and its creative scene, you would feel it and touch it and meet,” he continued.

Tidefjärd moved to Berlin in 2001 and quickly learned there wasn’t many “cool trendy restaurants” at that time. So he scouted out the places he’d want to go and “put together a tour to offer travelers who are keen on the food scene. But not traditional restaurants, more hip. Berlin doesn’t represent Germany because it’s much more multi-cultural,” he said. “This is more like New York or London. If you go to Munich there you will find the authentic German food, here’s it’s really international,” Tidefjärd said.

Over the last couple of decades the city has experienced a culinary explosion of immigrant and classic cuisines, as well as an impressive array of fine dining, adding to Berlin’s increased popularity.

“We have the biggest Turkish community in the world outside of Turkey. They are important to Berlin. They have restaurants open 24 hours, they import fresh fruits and vegetables. They’re very hard working people. They put the spice in city. We also have a big Vietnamese population because during the Cold War there was an exchange between Communist countries. In East Germany, they got Vietnamese workers to work in the factories and they stayed here. We have so many good Vietnamese restaurants,” Tidefjärd told The Voluntourist.

But eating good relatively inexpensive food isn’t the only exciting thing about Berlin.

“When it comes to sex, drugs and rock n’ roll, people should make their own decisions on what to do and when we do it. That’s why there’s no closing restrictions on bars and club,” Tidefjärd said. And on our tour of Mitte, one of Berlin’s coolest neighborhoods, he explained how locals like to party.

Dead Chicken Alley

“A typical bar scene looks like someone pulled in furniture from the street or the garbage. We like the concrete and rough style because that means we can’t destroy anything when we’re having a good time. If you walk into a fancy place where they have a fancy chandelier and it’s super nice, you’re afraid to dance because you don’t want to destroy anything. In Berlin we go pretty wild and want to feel relaxed. So we love vintage furniture because it’s already used. And we like concrete because that means it’s very stable to dance on,” Tidefjärd laughed.

Inside Cosmic Kaspar–a popular local bar in Mitte, Berlin

Another amazing fact about Berlin is how welcoming locals are.

“Berlin is a city of contrast. When it comes to people, Berlin is a healthy city with acceptance and tolerance of others. In one courtyard you have part of a building, which is more like a community, bohemians, anti-capitalists, anti-fascists. Then next door you have Coco Chanel people, very wealthy, hipster people who have moved in,” Tidefjärd told us.

“Many other cities around the world you have the rich people in the centers and their own communities, so they never get the chance to meet those alternative people and vice versa. So in Berlin we have a high acceptance and understanding of subcultures because they live next door. That makes us very healthy and not divided or segregated. That’s why Berlin is such a special city where we love each other and we live in peace,” he added.

Tidefjärd and his team of 40 guides entertain intrepid travelers, large groups, corporations, celebrities and thrill seekers who are into vibrant culture, cutting-edge architecture, shopping, art, lifestyle, fabulous food and parties.

Here’s just a taste of what you could be doing on a Berlinagenten tour.

“In the summertime you have to check out the beach clubs. We don’t need to go to Ibiza. We have the best summer parties. The two you must go to are Haubentaucher and this floating swimming pool in the river called Badeschiff,” Tidefjärd said.

“Another cool thing to do is the historical airport Tempelhof. It’s the former American airport during the Cold War. It’s a public park today so you can go ziplining, parachuting, picnicking, grilling, whatever. You have fun on the runway. It’s a very cool place. There are so many different ways to discover Berlin, but the waterways is the highlight because you see places that you wouldn’t from the street. You will be surprised about the hidden gems around the river. It’s beautiful and fun,” he added.

If you are looking to just hit up Berlin’s typical touristy attractions, Tidefjärd isn’t for you, but he does have some advice.

“Don’t do the beer bikes. It’s so touristic. You just go around on a stupid bike with 10 people with a barrel of beer and a Berliner will spit on you and throw a bottle of beer at you because we hate it.”

Also check out Gil Travel Group if doing a fun multi-city vacation of Eastern Europe is more your thing. I’m all about tours when I travel and while I haven’t tried Gil Travel Group yet, they look awesome and I hope to soon.

TOMS Launches End Gun Violence Campaign and Donates $5 MILLION

TOMS announced “End Gun Violence Together,” a campaign aimed at helping end the epidemic in America and kickstarting an evolution to the brand’s giving model. To launch the campaign, TOMS will invest $5 million into organizations across the country that are committed to addressing the complex nature of gun violence through various tactics including programming in communities of color, mental health, research and policy, suicide prevention, and more.

In response to the seemingly never ending mass shootings in the United States, TOMS will call on their customers and all Americans to take a stand to support organizations working towards an end to gun violence. Americans can use technology available on their website to urge their Members of Congress to take immediate action on this issue by passing universal background checks, which over 90% of Americans support. By visiting TOMS.com people can easily write and send postcards to their representatives and voice their support for change.

In addition to transforming its homepage into a tool for civic engagement, TOMS will devote its full platform — including digital resources, their retail stores, and social media channels — to promote social advocacy. Supporters will also be able to use the TOMS website to learn more about the growing coalition of organizations they will support including: Black and Brown Gun Violence Prevention Consortium, Everytown for Gun Safety, Faith in Action, Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence, Live Free, March for Our Lives, and Moms Demand Action.

“As I watched the horrific shootings in Thousand Oaks, just a few miles from TOMS’ headquarters and my home, I was overcome with immense fear for my own children and an understanding that parents across America — especially in communities of color — have been living with that same fear and loss for far too long. We’ve been inspired by the organizations who have led this movement and by the students who have shown us unimaginable bravery and tenacity. We are ready to do our part and are asking all of our supporters to join us,” said Blake Mycoskie, Founder of TOMS. “Since day one, our mission at TOMS has been to create a better tomorrow. Over the past twelve years, we’ve given away 86 million pairs of shoes, provided 600,000 sight restorations, and helped secure 600,000 weeks of safe water to many communities. We are still committed to those endeavors and believe that creating a better future also means helping end gun violence today.”

“End Gun Violence Together” is the first initiative in TOMS’ new giving model, which will aim to put TOMS’ work and its giving dollars towards solving the problems that impact the world today. TOMS will continue to invest in shoes, sight, and water and, using the TOMS mission as its guide, will add new areas of giving, addressing the most pressing issues of our time. The company will invest in the organizations and ideas advancing its vision of a thriving humanity and will support these efforts through: programmatic investment, community activation, and awareness building across all its platforms.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, a retired American astronaut, engineer, U.S. Navy Captain and responsible owner of seven guns, said, “It’s our responsibility as a society to keep our children safe. Every child deserves to feel safe at home, at school, and in their neighborhood. Tragically, that’s not the reality in our country today. TOMS is joining us in the recognition that it’s time to change that. They know that when people from all walks of life come together to speak up and demand solutions, a safer future is possible. We are proud of the remarkable team at TOMS for leading by example and proving that everyone has a role to play in the fight to save lives from gun violence. We’re honored to partner with them and look forward to working with them to raise awareness about this critical issue.”

“I started organizing as a student because I felt an urgent need to make a difference and create a world where my peers and I would no longer have to live in fear. We refuse to be silent and we are immensely thankful that TOMS is lending its platform to support the movement and join us in demanding change,” said Winter BreeAnne Minisee, National Student Walkout organizer.

TOMS’ hope is that other companies will join them in taking a stand against gun violence in the weeks to come. WeTransfer is the first company to join the movement, generously donating advertising valued at $1 million on its platform in support of the campaign.

Over the life of the “End Gun Violence Together” campaign, WeTransfer will generate upwards of 40 million impressions through full screen wallpapers and in-house creative services support.

“Since the Parkland shootings this year, WeTransfer has been using the power of its media to deliver the message of gun reform to the millions that use the service each week. Commissioning film, long form journalism and using photography to tell the stories of those affected and lobbying for changes to prevent more of this insanity affecting children in our schools and adults throughout the country. Historically WeTransfer has given 30% of its media to support the arts, but increasingly that media space is being used to support Climate change, Gun Reform, Diversity and Digital Sustainability,” said Damian Bradfield, President of WeTransfer.

Although it’s challenging to find stylish, yet practical waterproof gear, Cabin Zero provides a solution. The British brand ADV DRY Collection features two different smaller waterproof bags: the ADV DRY 11L Cross Body and the ADV Dry 30L Backpack. Both are fashionable and have an inside pouch with RFID-blocking security pocket, detachable with a Velcro® brand fastener, and are packable into the same pocket. They’re lightweight, roomy, come in fun colors like blue, orange and green, and  hold up well on my adventures. Travelers will love these bags.

2. Aimee Kestenberg – Geo Chic Carry-On

I started using hardcase luggage a couple of years ago and I love it.  I find it to be more durable and it offers a layer of security soft-sided pieces can’t. My only one complaint was that I couldn’t overpack the hardcase bags because there’s no flexibility or stretch in the material. However, Aimme Kestenberg solves that issue. The Geo Chic 20′ carry-on is expandable so throw in those extra pair of shoes! This piece comes in three colors, is super chic and spacious. In addition, it has great wheels, it’s lightweight and the rose gold color is on sale at Amazon!

3. AcousticSheep Headphones

As much as I love my Bose headphones, I can’t sleep in them. I wear them constantly on flights to drown out the sound from other passengers, but I have to choose between sleeping and comfort. So when I heard about AcousticSheep, I knew I had to tell fellow travelers about them. The SleepPhones have thin wireless and removable speakers inside a soft headband that allows you to connect with nearby devices. The battery charging time is three hours and lasts up to 10 hours.

4. Jack Georges – Voyager Handsfree Belt Bag

The fanny pack is in the midst of a design reboot and revival and it’s working. The trend is making a come back so of course I had to include one in my holiday gift guide. Before it was only worn by tourists who cared more about comfort than style, but that’s totally changed. The past few seasons we’ve seen models walk the runway in high-end designer fanny packs, now called “waist-bag,” “belt-bag,” “hip-bag,” or in this case “handsfree belt bag.” We’ve also seen the ultra trendy bag on everyone from fashionistas to music festival goers to travelers who love the convenience of not lugging around a backpack or purse. It’s also catching on for men who fling them over their shoulder and across their chest. The Jack Georges handsfree belt bag is unisex, has a vintage rustic look and can hold your keys, phone, credit cards, ID and lipgloss.

I literally don’t travel anywhere without packing cubes. Even if I’m just doing an overnight trip, I use them for everything. I’m the worst at being organized and these help make packing much easier. What I love about the Kompressor Kubes by LightGear Bags is that you can compress pieces by nearly half. It works almost like an expandable bag. The various sizes of the cubes allows you to pack more effectively. Since they’re water and stain resistant they’re great for ensuring your shampoo and liquids don’t leak over everything. Care2Travel Animal Care – A Great Venture

A short time ago I had the opportunity of volunteering at the Care2Travel organization (www.care2travel.org) in the project of Animal Care, during that time I was working closely with a local animal shelter called Pro Animalia Shelter in aiding puppies to be put up for adoption. The shelter helps care for dogs, young and old, and tries to ensure that they reach good homes for a better life through adoption centers primarily in Germany to ensure that they get the best chance had to have a loving home, raising awareness to the current stray dog problem that plagues Romania.

My volunteer program with Care2Travel was located in Miercurea Ciuc and just a forty minute walk from the town, although in harsh weather conditions the volunteer coordinators always offered to drive me down to the placement. My goal was to try and gain the trust of the puppies and dogs who often didn’t use to human contact and try to get them ready for a life with a loving family. Each day I had three kennels to spend time at, it is recommended that volunteers spend a minimum of fifteen minutes at each kennel, although I found myself staying there for at least thirty to forty-five minutes. As often the staff and workers are busy with their own jobs of upkeep and maintaining the grounds I went about doing my job without bothering them and at the end always tried to ask around to see if there was any help I could do before returning back to my accommodation.

The shelter had a bathroom for use and a room where volunteers could warm up during the colder months or sit down for a break with a tea or coffee. Typically I would arrive at 10:00a.m in the morning, on the first day I was given a brief introduction and orientation to the grounds and was shown which kennels I could enter and which I could not.

Although I was the only volunteer working at the shelter and therefore didn’t spend much time interacting with other people while I was there, I never felt out of place or lost. I spent three hours each day in the company of dogs, which was some of the best time I spent on the trip! It definitely didn’t feel like I was doing a lot in the beginning, I mean what kind of work involves playing with puppies for three hours a day? But then I realized something, the shy puppies when I started working there who originally wouldn’t let me pat them, let alone go near them soon were sitting by me and wanted attention.

It was eye-opening to realize that without my presence there, it was a real possibility that these puppies, who were shy and afraid of humans, would grow up without a family and stay at the shelter until they were old and unable to be adopted out. It’s impossible to ask that the people who work there day after day give this much time to the dogs, though they always tried to find time in their day to play with them, so volunteers become invaluable.

Housing was provided by the team for up to 12 volunteers for girls and 10 for boys, I believe. Heating was throughout the house and a thermostat is in the house to make sure it is always warm. Our accommodation manager would do shopping every Tuesday and Friday and would generally get whatever we wrote down on a list (besides a few items that were expensive due to being out of season) and if anything went wrong in the house that needed repairs he would sort it out. At the end of every week, we would have accommodations meetings to voice any concerns or issues but generally, we just talked with each other.

In fact, our coordinators organized two English Clubs that both volunteers and locals were welcomed to come to during the week, we would discuss a range of topics and see lectures from people, during my stay we saw a lecture by Philip G. Zimbardo, which was paid for by the volunteer coordinator. They are now trying to expand the ethical tourism sector of their organization and provide job opportunities for locals by allowing them to conduct tours and show their culture at the same time. I paid for my volunteer program, for the two weeks I stayed I paid $520 USD.

If you are looking to volunteer and help out, I’d definitely recommend you volunteer with Care2Travel and their program for Animal Care and hope to one day myself return to Romania and go back to the shelter again.

Michelle Obama Donates 10% of “Becoming” Book Tour Sales to Local Charities

For the last decade Michelle Obama has been a integral figure in leading movements to empower women, educate children and encourage others to live a healthy productive lifestyle. Although it’s been two years since the former First Lady has been in the White House, she’s still inspiring people with her passion for helping others and her deeply personal stories that reveal her struggles with marriage, family and the current president.

Heather Newgen Profile PhotoBy: Heather Newgen | Twitter: @hnvoluntourist

To promote her book “Becoming” Michelle Obama is doing a 12 city book tour, which kicked off in Chicago. Her second stop was in Los Angeles, where “Blackish” star  Tracee Ellis Ross moderated the interesting discussion in front of a sold out live audience.

Through incredible wit and humor, the two talked about everything from Mrs. Obama’s childhood and growing up, with Michelle saying “I was feisty from the beginning,” to her time at Whitney Young, and first meeting Barack. Michelle Obama was personal and approachable as she discussed pivotal parts of the book and moments of her life including opening up about marriage counseling and her miscarriage.

The night was filled with invaluable advice from Mrs. Obama’s experience leading up to and in the White House, as written in her memoir. BECOMING is available now in the U.S. and Canada from the Crown Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House, as well as in 28 languages around the world. An audio edition of the book, read by Mrs. Obama, is available in digital and physical formats by Penguin Random House Audio.

The price tag to see Mrs. Obama on one of her stop can be hefty–they can range upwards to $2,750 for a meet and greet. However, 10 percent of ticket inventory from each stop are being given to local charities, schools, and community groups in each city the tour visits. Produced by Live Nation, the outing continues on to Washington D.C. later this week.
